Ivermectin is a semi-synthetic derivative of Avermectins, which are a group of chemically related macrocyclic lactones, produced by the fermentation of a soil-dwelling fungus, Streptomyces avermitilis . It is highly active against a wide spectrum of nematode species.
The long-acting formulation ensures a slower absorption process from the subcutaneous space and greater persistence of concentrations in the bloodstream and in the tissues where the parasite resides. The strategic use of long-acting ivermectin is aimed at increasing the drug's protection period, reducing livestock production costs. The degree of improvement in parasite control results in improved animal health and a reduction in pasture contamination.
